Class 4: Visual Art

This week we drew flower gardens and discussed what a flower garden requires in order to thrive.  First, we spoke about the carbon dioxide that plants breathe, and the rain and sun that helps them grow big and strong just like us.
Some of us drew a nice big sun to accompany our gardens, and some drew rain clouds.

Class 1 - Literacy

Class one worked on our literacy today. We have been practicing recognizing and writing the letters of our alphabet. We have been using flash cards, sandpaper letters and workbooks to enhance our phonics. We focused more on tracing the letters. We sat on a chair and chose a coloured pencil and traced some letters. While tracing them, we verbally say how we do it such as "M up down up down".

Elect 1.6 cooperating, 3.7 exploring literacy, 3.11 letter recognition, 3.14 beginning to write letters of the alphabet and some high frequency words

Class 1 rehearsed!

Class one has been practicing very hard on their dances and songs for the concert. We practiced our jazz, ballet and hip hop dances. We were fortunate to have class 4 as an audience to practice dancing in front of other people. We jumped, stomped our feet, tiptoed, put our hands on our knees and hips, rolled our hands and pointed our toes. We had fun as we rehearsed for our concert at the same time improve our gross motor skills!

Elect 1.3 peer group entry skills, 1.5 interacting positively and respectfully, 1.6 cooperating, 5.1 increasing levels of activity, endurance and variation in types of activity and skills, 5.2 gross motor skills, 5.4 auditory skills and music

Class 1 & 4: Literacy

Yesterday afternoon class 1 and 4 did a collaborative spring drawing.  We used crayons to make our drawings and today we will use special stickers to further enhance our piece.  We were asked what we thought of when we thought of spring; some of us said worms, some said rain, rainbows and flowers.    We worked well as a group during this activity while practising etiquette and our social skills.
Now we'll have to find a place to display our work.

Class 3 - word hunt

Ms. Heather surprised us with some telescopes today. We used them to hunt for words around our playground and class room. When we found a word Ms. Heather helped us read it and then we wrote it down on our clip board paper. Copying printed words helps reinforce our understanding of directionality and our letter recognition. (Elect: 3.12, 3.13, 3.14)

Class 5 - Observing insects

We get so excited when little creatures visit us in the playground- and today we had a visit from a super cute ant!
We talk to each other about how to be kind to the insects that visit us- we never try to deliberately squish them!
We love to sit back and observe what the insects get up to; today we thought that the ant may have been looking for food because he was walking around in big circles and not really stopping anywhere.
It's fun to make predictions and connect what we already know to what we are seeing. I wonder who might visit us next?

ELECT 2.6, 4.4, 4.5, 4.7, 4.9, 4.10

Class 3 - Alphabet circle

Class 3 had time to play with the squishy soccer ball today. We had a good time passing the ball around our circle. Each person to throw the ball had to think of a word starting with a certain letter. We worked on the letters T and D.
Passing the ball and catching is a good way to develop gross motor skills. Taking turns and brainstorming is a great way to encourage pro-social development! (Elect 1.1, 1.5, 3.4, 3.10)

Class 4: Rainforests

Class 4 wrote the word, 'Rainforest' this week and then decorated their rainforest as they saw fit. Some of us stuck to practical colours, like greens and browns; but most of us really wanted to explore a world of colour.  We all picked out topical birds and flowers to accompany this piece.  We were very dedicated to doing a job well done.

Class 1 - Name practice

Class one worked on their names today. We recognized and spelled them with the help of our special coloured name tags.

We were sitting in a circle when we were given surprise paper bags. We were told to look at it and we immediately recognized that the card inside contains our name tag. There were also another set of cards which we figured out as puzzles for our names. We all had a turn to put out our name, say it and spell it. Some of us spelled it inversely while some spelled directly according to the name tag.

What a fun way to learn and spell our names! Day by day we are getting more interested in print and maybe we could read some basic words soon too!

Elect 1.5 interacting positively and respectfully, 2.6 positive attitudes towards learning, 3.7 exploring literacy, 3.11 letter recognition, 3.12 understanding of orientation and familiar conventions of print, 3.13 matching spoken words with written ones, 4.6 collecting and organizing information, 5.3 fine motor skills

Class 5 gets bilingual

This morning we decided to add an extra element to our 'My summer garden' sentences by also including the same sentence in French!
So we asked Ms Tary to show us the translation and we added ' Mon jardin d'été' to our pages.
To finish up our fancy bilingual writing we used some sparkly stickers to create our very own  'jardin d'été'
We hung them up on the mirror, we hope you like them!

ELECT 3.2, 3.3, 3.7, 5.3

Class 1 - typing emails

Today class one worked on typing some emails. We borrowed some keyboards from Ms Becky's class and sat down on our chairs to start. We first identified the parts of our keyboard. We pointed out the letters, numbers, enter key and space key. We also practiced using our tiny fingers to type on it. We learned that email means electronic mail which sends messages with the use of computer, tablet or smartphone. We were saying out loud the message that we are typing. Some of us said that it's an email for our mama and papa and we are thanking them that we are in LFLF with our wonderful friends. We also said that we are thankful for our toys and clothes. We ended our email by saying that we love them.

Elect 2.4 recognizing and expressing emotion, 3.1 using verbal and nonverbal communication, 3.4 conversing with peers and adults, using descriptive language to explain, explore and extend, 3.7 exploring literacy, 3.11 letter recognition, 3.12 understanding of orientation and familiar conventions of print, 4.6 collecting and organizing information, 4.8 communicating feelings, 5.3 fine motor skills

Happy 5th Birthday!

One of our friends turned five today - and we had such an awesome time celebrating!
We played sleeping animals  (and sleeping Mario!), we played musical chairs, and then we just had a free dance for the fun of it.
For our afternoon snack we also had some delicious popsicles for a special birthday treat in the playground!
We are so very proud of our friend on his big day- Happy Birthday, K!
