Class 5 - Polishing experiment

Last week we got to have a look at some Australian coins that Ms Becky brought to school for Australia. We noticed that the coins were not very shiny, so we wanted to discover a way to make them beautiful again! We researched online and found a method using baking powder, which we have right here in our classroom, and water!

First we needed to mix a tiny amount of water with our baking powder to make a paste, just like toothpaste, and then we used our fingers to scrub! It was so cool to watch the coins come back to their shiny best as we worked the paste into all the little grooves and corners. This ended up being quite the fine motor workout!
Once we were happy with our scrubbing we decided to put all our coins and baking powder paste together in a big bowl and added some vinegar for a big, fizzy finale. Look how shiny the coins are now!
