Holiday Decorating

Today our classes started decorating the holiday tree. We each took turns picking something out of the decoration box and picked a perfect spot on the tree to hang it. This promoted verbal interaction and discussion as each child told their friends why they chose that decoration and what we liked about it. We also talked about how we decorate our own houses for the holidays and how excited we are to play outside in the snow during the holidays! The classes worked together taking turns to place the decorations on the branches of the tree. We created a wonderful team!

November Project

This month we have been learning about colours. For our November Project we mixed our very own paint colours and painted some very intricate plaques. The children used primary colours to mix secondary colours and then created tertiary colours. Our November Projects are on display in the vestibule this week.

Jr Pre K Obstacle Course

During outdoor play the Pre K's always enjoy hopping on our outdoor blocks, so we decided to make an obstacle course. We had to hop on all of the green blocks, turn twice when we got in the hula hoop, jump 3 times when we got to the yellow block and touch out toes when we got to the triangle. The children practiced their social skills as they waited patiently for their turn as well as their recall skills as they had to remember what to do on each block. We had a lot of fun!

Jr Pre K's Mixing Colours in Art

In Art Class, the Junior Pre K's created a painting while learning about mixing colours. Before we created our painting, we mixed blue paint with some red paint and watched it turn to purple. We painted red on half of our paper, and painted blue on the other half. Then, we folded our paper in half and rubbed the paper with our hand to mix the paint. While doing this we also talked about what might happen if the two colours mix. When we opened it we saw that the two colours had turned purple! We are all excited to try mixing the other primary colours next week!

Happy Blue Day!

JK Science

Today our JK class did a Science Experiment.
We decided to take our knowledge from mixing paints last week and apply it to mixing food dye. We made our predictions about how the colours would mix and then we experimented!
We learnt that our primary colours when mixed together create secondary colours. We even tried to mix secondary colours with each other to see what we would end up with. As we conducted our Science experiment we recorded our findings used print and illustrations.

We did a wonderful job!

Magician!

Today Mr Scott the Magician came to visit us. We had such a great time watching the magic tricks. There was even a special bunny helper named Houdini who we all got to take a turn of patting. At the end of the show Mr Scott even taught us how to do some secret magic tricks :) However we won't be teaching you how we learnt to do it - a magician has to keep their magic secrets!

Remembrance Day

Today we had a lesson on Remembrance Day. We talked about why it is a holiday and why we honour those soldiers who fought in the war. We decided to make our very own poppy's with various materials; paints, crayons, tissue paper, and markers. We started by writing the word poppy in the center of the flower and continued to build on it until it looked like a beautiful poppy that would grow in Flander's Field.

A Colourful World with Sr. Pre K

This week the children explored colours in many ways. They each received a colourful book where they match specific items to the colour that represents them. The children are thinking of lots of different colourful things that they see on a day to day basis and it is creating great dialogue between all of them. Next, we did an experiment with food colouring and water to start understanding the primary and secondary colours. We predicted what colour would be made when we mixed two primary colours together and all watched closely to see if we were correct!

Colours with Jr Pre K

This month we are focusing on our colours! We picked the 3 primary crayon colours (red, blue and yellow) and made a picture. Then we all sat in a circle with objects and practiced naming their colours, as well as finding other objects around the room that are the same colour. Then we played our colour game! We put different colour blocks, shapes and crayons in the middle of our circle and when Ms Chrisa said a colour, we all took turns picking up an object of that colour. The children were also practicing their social skills as they patiently waited for their turn.

Jr Pre K Fall Fun!

This week our Jr Pre K's have been having a lot of fun with the leaves during outdoor play!We helped our teacher gather the leaves in one pile. Then we helped pick up the leaves and put them in bags. As a class, we talked about the seasons changing and the weather getting colder, which is why the leaves are falling from the trees. When we were almost done picking up the leaves, we all picked up a bunch, threw them in the air and watched them fall down. We all had a lot of fun!

Happy Yellow Day!

Today we had a yellow day celebration! The children wore the colour yellow to School. The JK class took turns making a list of what yellow items of clothing the children had on. We then decided to paint only using yellow and variations of yellow in our visual art class. We tinted and toned our yellow paint using white and black. The children then thought to mix in the other primary colours to create secondary colours. We had a great yellow day :)
