Class 5 - The ice garden

Today we finally got to go back outside  to check on our ice balloons! We have been looking out our window for the last week down at our frozen balloons. We could tell that they were frozen because we could see that the ice had burst through the rubber! So today was our chance to finally go and take a closer look. We were fascinated to find that our balloon had started to melt into a puddle when it was  warm yesterday, but as the temperature dropped back below zero over night the puddle froze solid again! We discovered  that when the temperature is above zero water stays liquid; but when  the temperature goes to zero or below, water freezes into solid ice! We decided to explore for more frozen puddles and we hit the jackpot with the upside down paddling pool! Ms Becky tipped the big pancake of ice out of the pool while we stood far away to watch, and as the ice met the ground it cracked into lots of little pieces. We decided to use our snow shovels to move all the ice and make a beautiful, shining ice garden! We think it looks beautiful, and we are looking forward to using our  ice garden to track whether the temperature is above or below freezing.
